A technical and aesthetic bridge in Leiden

Spanbeton supplies beams for an iconic bridge project in Netherlands

The ‘Valkbrug’ bridge connects the old town and the northern part of Leiden. The current bridge, designed originally as an emergency bridge, has to be replaced after more than 15 years of service. The new bridge, with a span of 26 metres, consists of four bridges standing side by side. Two for car traffic in both directions and two for cyclists and pedestrians. The new ‘Valkbrug’ bridge was designed by the Belgian architect Ney & Partners.

Technical masterpiece

Architects designed a bridge whose bottom shape varies in shape. In order to achieve this unique design, Spanbeton has developed an innovative solution combining two separate beams into one concrete prefabricated element. The Valkbrug bridge consists of four spans with a total of 18 concrete prefabricated elements.

Aloys Berendsen, project leader at the contractor Van Boekel Bouw & Infra, commented,

“The solution adopted, combining beams to built the bridge, is a technical masterpiece. Coordination, engineering and planning were extremely tight and well managed by all parties involved. The solution proposed, in line with architect’s requirements, suitable for transportation and assembly in a tight schedule makes Consolis Spanbeton a fairly unique company ”.
