A few words from Mikael Stöhr, CEO Consolis

What´s your analysis of the market situation, now and in the coming years?

It´s turbulent times for sure, both in the world – and in our industry. I am confident that no one in our industry has the same power to take on the challenges as all of us in the Consolis Group. For example, we have decided to take a leading role in the journey towards net zero concrete buildings.

So how do you work towards those goals?

Our key to success is our industrial focus combined with great team spirit. Companies that can win in each local market by drawing on the power of global teams will be the winners of the future. That’s why I think our Industry Heroes initiative is important, celebrating the employees at Consolis. They are the ones who work every day to solve problems, do the work and find new ways of doing it even better, true heroes.

How do you balance the group leadership with the local presence?

We have strong local roots, based on relations and knowledge, and what we deliver adds to the well-being of so many people; hospitals, offices, industrial buildings, schools, universities, and homes. From a group perspective, we do everything we can to support this local power. That is one of the ingredients in our winning recipe.

Ok lastly, what are your main professional goals right now?

My ambition is to unlock the whole construction industry’s environmental challenges by bringing together all our local and international competence. We will do that by putting sustainability at the heart of everything that we do and produce. There is strong market demand for low-carbon products, both now and in the future, and we are glad to be able to deliver on that. Not only the market needs this, but our planet too.

As a Quality Manager I work together with colleagues to ensure we meet industry standards, such as ISO standards, and maintain a high quality. This is especially true when it comes to sustainability which is a challenge in the construction industry.

How does your work contribute to Consolis ambition to be a leading force in the industry?

I have strong ties to academia, and I think it is important for us to keep up with knowledge development and science, applying the latest technology to achieve better sustainability performance. At Consolis we are leading the sustainable transformation in our field, testing new alternative binders in the concrete mix for our Consolis Green Spine Line®, always aiming to significantly cut CO2 emissions.

What does it mean to you to be an Industry Hero?

Calling the employees at Consolis “Industry Heroes” is a clever way to highlight how important our everyday work is. I notice how many colleagues strive to become even better at what they do, and I continuously educate myself to stay at the top level of my field.

I’m in charge of customer relationships and new business opportunities. We have a stable market but always need to look at our business in innovative ways and stay close to our customers.

How does your work contribute to Consolis ambition to be a leading force in the industry?

We’ve created and developed a production chart for agile operations on each casting line, letting us offer top-of-the-line technical solutions, but always keeping price, production time, and our customers’ needs in mind. I coordinate our Design & Tendering department and work hard together with the designer to find the best solution for our customers. We also strive to keep continuity at each casting line to ensure maximum capacity which is also good from a sustainability perspective, optimizing production flows.

What does it mean to you to be an Industry Hero?

My focus at work is keeping close customer relationships, working agile and flexible, being solutions-orientated, and keeping a fighting spirit. These are aspects that I think make an Industry Hero.

Béla has been working at Consolis for 8 years. He oversees sensitive processes such as the production of hollow core elements.

What’s your role at Consolis?

I’m in charge of the complete production planning in our plant in Hódmezővásárhely. This means I load the production schedule based on project lead times and adapt the work process according to all that can happen: machine breakdowns, delays in the supply chain or the design approval process for example. It also happens that the customer is changing specification for certain elements during the ongoing production, e.g. requiring the insert of one more cast-in detail to be included in the element before it leaves the plant, and we need to redesign production along the way.

How does your work contribute to Consolis ambition to be a leading force in the industry?

Our Design & Build approach allows us to adapt in real-time to changing conditions, leading to higher productivity and happier customers. It’s a challenging process but leads to better results exceeding by customer expectations in a fast-changing environment. I think this is an example of Consolis taking a truly leading role in our industry.

Aiming to be a hero in our field is a great way for me and my colleagues to continue developing and improving our processes in the production plant, to better handle challenges every day.

How does your work contribute to Consolis ambition to be a leading force in the industry?

In my opinion, it’s all about keeping the larger picture in mind for each task. Involving all parties closely and collaborating in our projects, provides a holistic view of tasks. Staying one step ahead, we generate value for both customers and society. It can be in terms of resource efficiency, enabling the reuse of materials such as our benches made from recycled concrete that we use at our site.

I try to always be helpful and do what needs to be done together with my colleagues. We all strive towards the same goal, to find the best possible solution to our customers’ challenges. That’s what heroes do – solve problems.

How does your work contribute to Consolis ambition to be a leading force in the industry?

I think dialogue is central to driving our industry forward. We have a very good dialog with our customers and together we can reduce CO2 emissions and drive development forward. One example is a new housing project in Kista, close to Stockholm, where we have used a concrete mix with husk ashes to reduce the use of cement. Our strong customer relations throughout the whole process, and shared climate targets, boost efficiency and cut carbon emissions.

An Industry Hero to me is a strong team member, that takes on the challenge of finding new ways of working to achieve better results. It feels great to be one of them.

As an Advisor I collaborate with our customers to solve their problems, for example, offer intelligent load-bearing structures, or services that enable better, faster, and more cost-efficient construction.  I am the point of contact for contracting parties and their advisors, including architects, structural engineers, developers, and installation, and building physics consultants.

How does your work contribute to Consolis ambition to be a leading force in the industry?

Sustainability is a clear focus for us and something I work with daily. Consolis ambition to reduce carbon emissions and offer more sustainable solutions is leading to a shift in customer demands. We’re happy to lead this sustainability transformation with our circular solutions and we can for example offer low-carbon hollow-core slabs.

What does it mean to you to be an Industry Hero?

I try to work with a broad spectrum of sustainability, with circular economy, reuse of building material, and other areas to achieve CO2 reductions. I share my thoughts at trade fairs, seminars, and other networking events and engage in discussions on topics such as thermally active buildings, sustainable schools, healthy and comfortable buildings, and adaptability. This way I try to influence stakeholders in the construction industry towards more sustainable practices.
