Consolis and Betolar begin industrial production of market-leading low-carbon hollow core slabs

Consolis and Betolar begin industrial production of market-leading low-carbon hollow core slabs

Innovative collaboration delivers hollow core slabs with up to 75% lower CO₂ emissions, combining advanced materials technology with industrial precast concrete expertise.

Consolis Parma, a subsidiary of Consolis Group, has signed a three-year license and supply agreement with Finnish materials technology company Betolar to begin industrial-scale production of low-carbon hollow core slabs using Betolar’s Geoprime® solution. The agreement grants Consolis Parma exclusive rights in Finland, while allowing other Consolis Group companies in 17 countries to assess and adopt the technology in their operations.

Following successful testing and regulatory approvals, the hollow core slabs will now enter industrial production. The innovative Geoprime® binder, derived from industrial side streams, replaces cement while maintaining the strength, durability, and safety of conventional precast concrete. This marks a significant advancement in sustainable construction, achieving up to 75% lower product-specific CO2 emissions compared to a standard product (conservative benchmark from the Finnish National Emissions Database).

Proven performance and compliance with industry standards

The low-carbon hollow core slabs have undergone rigorous testing. They have received EN standard approval and recognition from the Finnish Concrete Association for the use of activator chemicals as concrete admixtures. These approvals enable CE marking, ensuring that the new hollow core slabs meet the highest quality and safety standards.

“At Consolis, our goal is to provide high-performance, low-carbon concrete solutions that meet the evolving needs of the construction industry,” says Thomas Blanksvärd, Technical Director, Consolis Group. “With this agreement, we are not only expanding our sustainable product portfolio but also reinforcing our commitment to helping our customers achieve their environmental goals.”

A new era for sustainable precast concrete construction

Hollow core slabs are a cornerstone of modern precast construction, providing lightweight and structurally efficient solutions for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. The adoption of Geoprime® technology is a key milestone in reducing the lifecycle emissions of buildings.

“The results from our collaboration with Betolar demonstrate how we continue to develop innovative solutions that provide our customers with even lower-emission precast concrete elements, supporting the industry’s transition towards sustainable low-carbon construction,” says Hannu Tuukkala, CEO of Consolis Parma.

For Betolar, the agreement represents a major step in bringing low-carbon concrete technology into widespread use.

“Low-carbon hollow core slabs and other precast concrete products can significantly reduce the life-cycle emissions of a building. This commercial agreement with Consolis Parma is an important step for us in bringing low-carbon products to the market and we are very pleased with the opportunities our cooperation offers to both parties”, says Tuija Kalpala, CEO of Betolar.

Scaling up production to meet market demand

Production will begin gradually, starting with a pilot project, followed by a phased increase in output. The agreement ensures that both Consolis Parma and Betolar will continue to uphold strict quality control and environmental responsibility throughout the manufacturing process.

By combining Consolis’ expertise in industrial precast concrete production with Betolar’s advanced binder technology, the partnership is setting a new standard for sustainable construction materials, providing customers with ready-to-use, low-carbon solutions for future building projects.
