Cairo Metro Line 3 is the main line of the Cairo Metro mass transit system in Greater Cairo, Egypt. Currently, the line connects Attaba in East-central Cairo with Abbasia and Heliopolis to the Northeast. The line will eventually extend from the Northwest of the Greater Cairo area at Imbaba to the Northeast serving Cairo International Airport. The line will cross the River Nile twice at the Western branch between Kit-Kat and Zamalek and the Eastern branch between Zamalek and Downtown Cairo. The total length of the line will be approximately 30.6 km which will be implemented in four phases.
ECPC, Consolis’ Egyptian subsidiary, was selected to supply tunnel lining segments and precast bridge beams. The Phase 3 contract for Line 3 was contracted to the joint venture led by Vinci Construction Grands Projets, alongside Bouygues Construction’s subsidiary Bouygues Travaux Publics and their Egyptian partners Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors.
Tunnel lining segments
Precast tunnel lining segments have been manufactured by Consolis Group for more than 35 years. Over the decades, we have produced more than 220,000 metres of tunnel. We have expertise in various sectors, such as transportation (road, train and mass transit), tunnels for freshwater, stormwater, wastewater and sewerage, utility tunnels and more.
The tunnel ring of the Cairo Metro Line 3 measures 8.35m in diameter and consists of 8 segments. The segments are produced in ECPC’s factory located in the 10th of Ramadan area, a large industrial zone near Cairo. The pictures below show the precast concrete segments put in place at Haron and Alf Maskan stations.
Prestressed bridge beams
ECPC was also selected to provide the bridge beams for Cairo Metro line 3 on its elevated viaduct part. In particular, ECPC supplied 848 prestressed beams (for the first time in Egypt) with an average span of 30 m. Spanbeton, Consolis’ Dutch subsidiary, brought its esteemed expertise and support to ECPC on that project. This collaboration led to impressive achievements.
Note: ECPC, Consolis’ subsidiary, is a recognized leader in precast concrete in Egypt. ECPC is the acronym derived from Egyptian Company for Prestressed Concrete. ECPC manufactures, among other items, prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCP), reinforced concrete cylinder pipes (RCCP), reinforced concrete pipes (RCP), concrete segments for tunnels and manholes. ECPC participates in numerous infrastructure projects, such as the New Suez Canal crossing, power plant cooling water systems and the development of new cities.
