Muotobetoni inventor wins the Ornamo Award

The Ornamo Prize is a prestigious acknowledgement that makes designers and artwork more visible. Renata Jakowleff is a glass artist and the inventor of the Muotobetoni (form concrete) technique, developed with Parma Oy.

Muotobetoni is a new, pat pending a technical solution to create three-dimensional images and texture in concrete. The technique offers limitless opportunities because of its scalability. It can be used to build entire houses, create attractive frontages and also bring art indoors through structural features and furniture. With Muotobetoni, it is possible to add 3D patterns and textures onto concrete structural elements of almost any size. The method is based on an insight into the way the material behaves during casting and before setting. Thanks to the high degree of flexibility it offers, this cost-effective solution can be used to create a range of finishes, even in the context of high volume commercial production.

The designer Renata Jakowleff is a perfect example of how artists can work together with industry in order to bring to life creative products.

Sami Sykkö, a journalist specialist in culture, fashion and art, who was awarded the prize this year, said the following about the award winner: “When art and the artist, architecture and construction come together in such a thoroughly original way, it is definitely worthy of an Ornamo Award”.

Renata Jakowleff also commented: “Concrete surfaces seem to have limitless possibilities. It scales so that you can build entire houses, for example. Or it can give relief to facades, interior structures, or solid furniture. It brings shape and life to where it otherwise be plain and flat grey mass.”
