The new wastewater treatment plant in Blominmäki, Espoo, has received international recognition at the Tekla Global BIM Awards 2020. Blominmäki’s wastewater treatment plant was selected as the winner of the category “Best Industrial Project”. Consolis Parma delivered more than 2,000 separate concrete elements, including aesthetic facades elements for the plant and administrative buildings.
The use of BIM models throughout the construction process was a key element of the project. Consolis Parma’s design models could be exchanged with the design teams, divided into several design offices (AFRY, FCG, Ramboll, A-Insinöörit). Thus, the data was shared seamlessly in both production and project management, and everyone could monitor the manufacturing and delivery situation of the elements in real-time.
Overall, BIM has been a great help to coordinate the project, which includes 70,000 m³ of concrete structures and covers over 10 hectares. The new Blominmäki wastewater treatment plant will be the most productive of its kind in the Nordics: it will remove up to 99 per cent of phosphorus from the water. When completed in 2022, the Blominmäki wastewater treatment plant will treat the wastewater of 400,000 inhabitants from Espoo and Kauniainen, Kirkkonummi, Siuntio and Länsi-Vantaa.
