The most sustainable precast concrete project in Spain thanks to Green Spine Line®
Consolis in Spain is launching updated low carbon precast concrete elements, Green Spine Line®, with approximately 30% CO2 reduction compared to local industry standards. The improved product line will be pioneered in a 45,000 sqm logistics center, built in collaboration with the logistics center developer Montepino and design and construction operator, Itercon.
“The result of this collaborative and innovative work is an important step towards transforming the concrete and construction sectors and unlocking the environmental challenges of our industry”, says Mikael Stöhr, CEO of Consolis.
Consolis Spain’s Green Spine Line® certified low carbon product line has undergone an evolution resulting in a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions. This updated product line has doubled the environmental impact reduction achieved by the first certified precast products, which was around 15%.
The exceptional outcome was achieved by collaborating with multidisciplinary teams within Consolis, as well as experts from universities, startups, and technology centers. And, it has been key to promoting collaboration throughout the value chain, from the logistics developer Montepino to the construction company Itercon, as well as with the main suppliers.
“We have invested heavily in R&D and carried out numerous tests at the industrial level in order to transform the way we produce precast concrete elements with the lowest carbon footprint in Spain“, says, Marcelo Miranda, Managing Director of Consolis Spain.
The evolution of the Green Spine Line® incorporates a large number of technological developments such as the use of alternative cements, nanoparticles, carbon-neutral steel, biofuel (generated with hydrotreated vegetable oil, HVO), as well as pioneering techniques in Spain such as CO2 injections into fresh concrete, which achieve permanent mineralization of the CO2, reducing the carbon footprint without affecting technical performance.
“These products involve transformations ranging from raw material research to nanotechnology, as well as transversal changes throughout production that include the use of energy from 100% renewable sources and circular economy principles such as recycling, reduction and reuse of all types of resources,” added Miranda.
First major project with a 30% CO2 reduction
The construction of the first project with the updated precast concrete elements is already underway: a logistics warehouse with a 45,000 sqm floor area, 56,000 sqm of storage space and 2,000 sqm of annexed office building. The location is the town of Illescas, Toledo, and its end user will be a supermarket chain.
The Green Spine Line® products have been developed to meet the growing market demand for solutions with a decreased environmental footprint, aligning with current and future ESG criteria.
